What Causes Sudden Burning Sensation In Thumb, Forefinger, Index Finger And Palm?

I seem to have a burning sensation in my thumb, forefinger and index finger and the palm area where the fingers meet the palm. It came on rather suddenly, and it seems to dissipate then come on stronger. Right now I don t feel it as strongly, and not at all in my thumb. It just started about 30 minutes ago.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems to be neuropathic pain and should be evaluated on sensory examination of upper limb by your primary care physician or may need nerve conduction studies to confirm it. Common causes are due to any compression at elbow or at its origin in the neck so X-ray cervical spine may be needed as well. Meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen along with muscle relaxants like tizanidine or orphenidine can be helpful for symptomatic relief. If pain is severe nerve pain suppressants like gabapentin may be needed.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
