What Causes Sudden Dizziness And Tingling In The Head And Neck?

I am a 43 year old male. About a year ago I experienced sudden dizziness and tingling in my head and down my neck. It lead to about 5 separate incidents over the period of that day. I then had dizziness for days off and on. I seriously thought that I was taking a stroke but was told at hospital that it wasn t the case. Just last week I was shopping in Walmart and the same thing happened. I got a sudden hot flash going up my neck to face and head and then the massive dizziness. My ears started to ring and I had about 3 separate incidents in about a one hour period. I again thought I was taking a stroke. I asked for an ambulance and the emt took my blood pressure and it was outrageously high. I seriously thought I was having a stroke and was going to die. It triggered massive anxiety which took a while to control but eventually they calmed me down and I was transported to a hospital where I was told that they did not believe it was stroke but that I may have been very dehydrated. I was given an iv and really really hydrated since. It s now 5 days later and I m still getting hot flashes and dizziness. Not the tingling in head but my neck get hot and I get dizzy. I ve stayed hydrated to the point that I am urinating every two hours. Its causing the anxiety that Ive never had in my life. I had to take Benadryl to sleep at night.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

A slipped intervertebral disc compressing on a spinal nerve is the most likely cause of these symptoms. Compression of the nerve causes tingling sensations and pain in the arm and the upper limbs.

An MRI of the cervical spine needs to be done to confirm the diagnosis. Using a cervical collar, application of local analgesic gel with hot fomentation, analgesic anti-inflammatory tablets along with pregabalin and methylcobalamin tablets will help.

Avoid using a pillow beneath the head while sleeping. Physiotherapy including cervical traction, short wave diathermy will be beneficial.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
