What Causes Sudden Fainting Spell Along With Profuse Sweating?

Asking for a friend - her husband had an episode Saturday night. He was eating cake and she looked over and he was holding fork with tines pointing in his palm. She said he then slumped over got sweaty and ashen color. She kept asking him if he was okay and for a while and not sure how long he didn t respond to her. He finally did respond and was not aware what had happened. We were out with them from 8:30 to about 10:00 pm. He had 2 beers. She called us the next day and said she was concerned about him and told us what happened. I told her I had noticed a couple of times who,e we were out that he was staring into space with kind of a blank look on his face. I then observed that he at one point looked like he might start crying. We have never seen this man emotional so not sure if I obsrved that correctly. Yesterday I was at their hiuse and he was just nit his self. He seemed very quiet and kind of withdrawn almost like a person who is deeply depressed. She called me kasf night and said they had gone to the bank early yesterday to make a house payment and later that afternoon he asked her if she had gone to the bank. He was the one driving, but did not seem to remember going. She thinks he had a stroke. I tried to convince her to take him to doctor or hospital yesterday to have an eg. She is a very head strong woman and does t always listen to others. He doesn t not like for friends to know when he is troubled or if something is going on health wise, but she turned to me to discuss in confidence. She did try to get him to go to doctor for a physical and he said he just had one about 4 months prior. As far as she knows that check up was okay. He is a very healthy make who turned 70 last week, we were out with them on his birthday for dinner and he seemed perfectly normal then. She told me she was going to call heart screening p,ace today as they are members and it has been about a year since last scan which showed no blockages. He is very healthy, won t take some RX meds due to affEcts and takes many many supplements. He is very smart and well informed about health issues, but to me is ignoring these symptoms for some reason saying there is nothing wrong pg with himself. We as friends are very concerned since wife thinks he had a stroke. A friend of mine to,d me strokes come in three, first two Ben g mild, and third being very strong and damaging. Is that true? Can an EKG detect a stroke? If not, what can? My friend Jackie is planning to travel by vehicle to .florida either Sunday or Monday leaving Jim at ho e to take care of their four dogs.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

These are nonspecific signs but may indicate some problems and in most cases is related to physical stress, sudden changes in positions from lying down to standing up, or as a result of consuming caffeine-containing beverages, tobacco, alcohol etc.

In this case, they do not have any medical underlying cause, and there is nothing to be worried about.

However, if this concerns you and is happening to you repetedly then some tests should be done which include:

- a complete biochemical panel
- blood glucose, liver function enzymes, kidney function tests, electrolytes
- a complete thyroid panel
- TSH, fT3, fT4
- a complete blood count
- an EKG

Depending on the results of these tests, further tests and treatment may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
