What Causes Sudden Hormonal Imbalance?

I missed my periods for 10 days and got chums yesterday. When consulted with doctor she told this hormonal imbalance not pregnancy. She has written for some blood test. I have never got an delayed periods before So what could be the reason for hormonal imbalance all of sudden
