What Causes Sudden Loss Of Blood In An Elderly Woman?
My 74 year old mother is currently receiving her second unit of blood today. She was hospitalized the beginning of June and received 2 1/2 units of blood at that time. She was hospitalized for over 2 weeks and no source of the blood loss was determined. What could be going on?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. What problem your 74 year old mother is facing needs to be investigated. There might be an indication for blood transfusion as her hemoglobin levels could be found very low. This could happen with insufficient production by bone marrow due to various reasons and inadequate nutrient supply through diet. Blood loss might not be always be the cause. It would be better if you could get her investigated thoroughly by getting the following tests done: 1. Complete Blood Count with peripheral smear examination. 2. Iron profile studies in blood sample. 3. Bone marrow aspiration and its examination. Kindly consult Physician with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
