What Causes Sudden Loss Of Consciousness Followed By Foam Discharge From Mouth?

My husband was sitting on the couch talking to me and began coughing. Moments later be was unresponsive and what appeared to be foam pouring out his mouth and nose. My son attempted to give him the heimlick maneuver because we thought he was chocking. He wasn t eating at the time, just drinking. When he came to he was disoriented and having trouble breathing. What could of caused this? Nothing like this has ever happened before.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history related to your husband having an incidence of coughing followed by unconsciousness and foam by nose and mouth, disoriented after coming out of it. He was drinking at that time and not eating, happened for the first time.
The most probable cause I can think about is one of the following:
Epilepsy like fit.
Laryngospasm meaning the closure of airway part called larynx or over-approximation of vocal cords.
Any neurological problem.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult the Doctor immediately or rush to ER for clinical evaluation an relevant investigations like:
CT scan of brain.
EEG that is electroencephalogram.
Tests of blood.
Neurologist's opinion and further management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
