What Causes Sudden Memory Loss?

Hi, I m very worried about my son, he is 45 & this is the second time this happened to him. He s been in a mental hospital twice for his, he claims he has no memory at all & his mind is blank, he also can t remember things at work, which really scares me. He s divorced & has custody of his teenage son. He s gone to a psychcogist & phychiatrist who put him on pills. Now he s seeing a neurologist who says he may have ADD is going to start him on Ritilin. What is your take on all of this mess. THANKYOU YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think your doctor may be right.

There is a possibility that there is attention deficit disorder, or ADD. If a person is not paying attention to the job at hand, obviously they would draw a blank about the activity when they are asked about the activity. Without paying attention to what you are doing, a memory cannot form. The onset may be related to other issues like his divorce and work pressures etc. The depression might be a significant reason for this.

However, from the message, it seems that these episodes of memory loss have come in suddenly. I would really recommend doing an MRI of the brain to rule out an organic cause of the illness. If this has already been done, and the MRI is normal, I would recommend trusting your neurologist.

I hope that helps. Feel free to contact me for any further details.
