Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My child is 3 years old and vomits fairly often. He averages about once a week. He is growing and gaining weight normally. The vomiting typically occurs when he is running or playing and especially if he has eaten in the previous hour. If he s laughing really hard or crying really hard, he will vomit sometimes too. What could be causing this? He has no real other symptoms that I ve noticed. We ve been dealing with this for his entire life, for the most part. My family doc suggests a swallow study but I m worried about putting my child through something like that...

General & Family Physician, Dr. Prakruthi's Response
Hi A swallow study is not invasive. Your son will be asked to drink a liquid and after sometime an x-ray will be taken. It won't hurt him one bit. In my opinion it's better to find out what's bothering him and treat him so he can be comfortable rather than prolonging this and wondering what could be wrong. You are doing this for your son's long term benefit so you do not have to feel bad for it. It looks like his lower esophageal sphincter maybe lax causing these episodes of vomiting. In the meantime you can feed him small meals at frequent intervals rather than large meals. Do not allow him to lie down immediately after a meal. Also avoid rigorous activities right after meals.
I hope this was helpful. I wish your son good health. Take care :)
