Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Sudden Numbness In Lower Legs While Running In A Child?
My 12 year old active - athletic son was running the mile today in gym class and had to go to the nurses office as his legs went numb from the knee down. The nurse did confirm this to be true. He stated this was the first time this had happened and it took the better part of 4 hours for him to regain all of the feeling back in his legs. Is this just part of growing? Is this normal, or should I be concerned?
I think your 12-year-old active-athletic son's muscles have been over-stretched while running the mile. This might explain his leg to get numb.
If I was his caring doctor, would recommend running a neurological exam, to rule out the early onset of possible Guillain Barre Syndrome or any other auto-immune disorder.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
