What Causes Sudden Onset Of Fever, Sore Throat And Pain In The Arm?

Hello, my boyfriend has a quick onset of a fever. This was preceded by a sore throat, pain shooting down his arm, and feeling like he was going to pass out. What could be going on? We have been trying to treat the individual symptoms with 800 mg of ibprofen, honey and gargling salt water. He is also highly fatigued and is sleeping most of the day

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

With the fever, sore throat and fatigue, I would be highly suspicious for infectious mono. The pain in the arm is not as typical, so this could be related to something else, or sometimes you can get nerve pain with infectious mono as well. Other possibilities would include strep throat, cytomegalovirus, or HIV, but I would consider infectious mono to be more likely than these. I would recommend that he get tested for this.

If he does have mono, unfortunately, there is not much that can be done to treat it. Mostly it is just treated symptomatically with paracetamol or Ibuprofen for the fever and throat pain. The spleen can sometimes become enlarged, and so if he participates in contact sports he may need to avoid those. The fever and throat pain usually resolve in a few weeks, but the fatigue can last for several months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
