Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Dysphagia is the term used to refer to difficulty in swallowing. Difficulty in swallowing may be because of the following causes:
1) Oropharyngeal causes like:
* Acute pharyngitis
* Acute tonsillitis
* Pharyngoesophageal diverticulum
2) Neurological causes like multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease, stroke, injury to brain or spinal cord
3) Esophageal causes like:
* Gastroesophageal reflux
* Esophageal tumors
* Esophageal webs
* Esophageal stricture

In her case, I suspect an upper respiratory tract infection like acute pharyngitis or laryngo-bronchitis. If fever is high, antimicrobial drugs like tab. Azithromycin is to be taken for 3 days. Drink only warm water. Gargling with warm water and salt. Tab. Acetaminophen to be taken every 6th hourly is prescribed. Adequate hydration is to be maintained. Rest for 2 days would help in recovery. Voice rest is needed too. If your symptoms do not subside even after 3 days, please do consult an ENT specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
