What Causes Sudden Pain At The Back Of The Head Long After A Head Injury?

Hello, my name is Raymond Thompson. I m 28 years old, 5 11, 150lbs. About 10 minutes ago I rose from my chair where I had been watching movie in order to go to the bathroom. I woke up on the floor, apparently (according to my wife) shouting or crying in pain. I have pain in the back of my head, in a place where around 10 years ago I suffered quite bad head injury due to fainting at school. The current pain is at the bump that developed back then. I m quite sure that I never had any scans or tests following this old fall (there was a lot of blood, followed by stitches on the wound and then, as I say, the bump.) Do you think I should see my doctor about this? What else can I add. Colours around the field of vision when I woke up, gone now...Anyway, thanks, Raymond.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the colors around the visual field, sudden pain at the of head and swelling indicates concussion through head injury and hematoma formation. As the current status is fine, there is no absolute emergency to rush to an ER, but as there was previous history of head injury and stitches need, I would recommend a basic physician evaluation in this direction and get guidance whether an X-ray or CT scan is required or not.

Primary relief with
- Ice application over the swelling part
- Analgesic as ibuprofen with paracetamol after meals
- Avoid driving at present
- Drink plenty of liquids

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
