What Causes Sudden Pain From The Hip To The Thigh?

My wife while standing at the sink suddenly encountered pain from the base of her front hip, down the front of the thigh, to about above the knee. This has her doubled over where she cannot stand up straight. She still encounters pain after 8 hours of cold packs and Aleve. It s a burning pain, she says. What could she be encountering?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Burning pain is typically neurological in nature (nerve related). This is called neuralgia.
Neuralgia can be burning, sticking, tingling, sharp etc

It can be temporary or permanent.

There are different possible causes such as: (1) diabetes
(2)trauma eg arthritis of the spine
(3)side effect of medication
(4)vitamin b12 or folate deficiency
(5)liver or kidney disease
(6)exposure to toxins
(7)neurological conditions such as stroke or ms
(8)infection such as shingles
(9)idiopathic- cause not known

If it continues or recurs persistently, then she may be need to see her doctor for assessment which would include physical examination and bloods.

Bloods such diabetes screening, liver and kidney tests, complete blood count, vitamin levels

I hope this helps
