What Causes Sudden Pain In Lower Left Back And Below Ribs?

My 26 year old daughter has strong pain in her back on her left side below her ribs. She says it came on suddenly and eased down gradually after 15-20 mins. She said she has had the feeling she has to urinate but doesn t have to.(which I know can be sign of urinary tract infection but no other symptoms) She doesn the believe it is this either. She had this same pain about six weeks ago,it lasted about the same amount of time but she had blood in urine. She also has felt extremely nauseous with both episodes.

Hello,

From reading your descriptions, it seems to me that it may be a case of kidney disease. But I must get confirmed by giving some tests. And also, the urinary symptoms that you are telling may be due to kidney stone also. Pain in the left lower back and urinary symptoms, both seems to be left kidney stones. Firstly, I should give you some tests to do for her.
I would like to suggest some tests:
1. Kidney CT
2. Complete Blood Count
3. Urine analysis

If kidney stone comes positive, then, a doctor may give Potassium citrate, given that, the stone is not so big which can be managed by drugs.
Otherwise there are several procedures for which you should go to a clinic.

For now, if there is too much pain, please give her Ibuprofen 400 mg as needed. If more than one dose is needed, please ensure that the gap between two doses must be 6 hours.

Please post the Test Result and a doctor here in HCM can advise her what to do next. Whether it can be managed by drugs or clinical procedure should be opted.

Meanwhile, you should read this guideline and ask her to follow the same:
In general, you can help to prevent kidney stones by drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding dehydration. This dilutes your urine and decreases the chance that chemicals will combine to form stones.

You can prevent calcium oxalate stones by eating low-fat dairy products and other calcium-rich foods. Taking calcium supplements, however, can increase the risk of stone formation.

People who excrete too much oxalate into their urine should avoid eating foods high in oxalate. These foods include beets, spinach, chard and rhubarb. Tea, coffee, cola, chocolate and nuts also contain oxalate, but these can be used in moderation. Eating too much salt and meat can cause more kidney stones to form.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
