What Causes Sudden Swelling Of Bottom Lip?

My bottom lip suddenly became swollen about 45 mins ago. No pain. No other symptoms. I did not bite it. I had actually taken benedryl prior to this happening to help me sleep. I did not eat anything new or different. Should I be concerned that the swelling could continue to my tongue/throat?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, Welcome to HCM.
It can be due to angioedema of lip which is a kind of allergic reaction. It may be due to benadryl or something else like insect bite or allergy to other allergen.
It is usually a self limited problem & expected to resolve in 2-3 days but it may be associated with anaphylaxis in some cases.
Currently, you should stop taking benadryl as you have started to have this after taking benadryl and it may be a reason. Also avoid any known allergen.
If it's not severe and there is no breathing difficulty then you can wait & watch.
Corticosteroids are indicated in moderate cases.
You should rush to ER if there is any breathing difficulty.
Hope this will be helpful.
Take care.
