What Causes Sudden Vaginal Bleeding?

Mystery to me. I had vaginal bleeding on 2 occasions. Once in October and once in Nov. I'm 81 yrs old.First bleeding was in toilet bowl, about a quarter of a cup with blood clots. Second bleeding was same amt. without clots in November. After each bleeding, perfectly clear ever since. No pain or other symptons. Had a pap test in August. Was normal. Do I need further testing, like an ultrasound ?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern.

1. In your age [81 years] the risk of cancer increases with age, and since PAP test is normal thus consult a Gynecologist to exclude other causes of bleeding like: ovarian cysts, cervicitis, endometritis, fibroids, vaginal infections

PS. The peak incidence for endometrial carcinoma is between 65 and 75 years of age.

2. Abdominal and pelvic examinations should be carried out to look for masses.
- Speculum examination should be performed to see if a source of bleeding can be identified, to assess atrophic changes in the vagina and also to look for evidence of cervical malignancy or polyps.
- Ultrasound scan can define endometrial thickness and identify structural abnormalities of the uterus, endometrium and ovaries,Endometrial biopsy provides a histological diagnosis
