What Causes Sudden Weight Gain And Difficulty To Swallow?

I am 55 years old, in 2007 I lost my husband suddenly and since then I have been having certain symptoms. I first developed allergies to wheat, mold, pollens and peanuts, lost some weight. I did have depressionI worked two jobs at that point. Then it changed, the allergies seemed to decrease accept for the mold and pollen especially in spring, I gained a lot of weight am about 40 lbs more than I should be. I play competitive sports, active outdoors, watched my diet. I am always hot, people wear sweaters and I walk around in a tank top . Sometimes I have difficulty swallowing. General thyroid tests come back normal. I can survive on 800 calories and still not lose weight. any suggestions

Hello,

Your symptom of sudden weight gain has the following causes:
1) Anti-psychotic drugs usage
2) Severe depression
3) Usage of corticosteroids
4) Hypothyroidism
5) Lack of exercise and stress eating
6) Ovarian cysts

Kindly observe if any of the above causes fit your symptom. The following are few points to be kept in mind for a safe weight loss:
1) Cut the carbs
2) Moderate intake of fats
3) High proteins
4) Intermittent fasting i.e., like eating a proper meal only once daily for 3 days a week; other meals can be substituted by fruits and veggies or an egg and milk
5) Regular exercise for 45 mins daily, 5 days a week is a must
6) If using any medication that may cause weight gain, talk to the prescribing doctor for alternatives or reduction in dosage.

With all the above efforts for at least regularly 2 months, no improvement is seen, you may need a detailed evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
