What Causes Swallowing Difficulty, Sore Throat And Cough After Swallowing Chewing Gum?
I forgot a chewing gum in my mouth all night and I woke up having difficulties swallowing. I had a sore throat and later a cough in d cause of trying to clear my throat. I would like to know if chewing gum contains Chemicals or acid dat can trigger a sore throat.
Normally chewing gums of good quality do not cause sore throat. Rather this should give relief in the symptoms of sore throat by preventing the dryness of throat due to production of excessive saliva. Saliva is a natural anti-bacterial agent and it also works as a natural lubricant of throat , thus relieving the symptoms of sore throat.
However, certain chemicals and irritants like cinnamon etc. may cause irritation to throat and hence, symptoms of sore throat. Also, continuous use of muscles of throat in the process of chewing gums, can have an straining effect on the muscles of throat, particularly, if the act of chewing done for a long time, as in your case.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
