What Causes Sweet Taste In The Mouth?

Everything my husband eats taste sweet. He is a diabetic but his sugar numbers have been a lot higher than they are now. He has kidney problems and has not seen his doctor in a while. Does this sweet taste have anything to do with his kidneys not filtering?

Hello,

I would like to state that sweet taste in the mouth can be due to various causes like diabetes, ketosis, or some neurological disorders. Since your husband is a diabetic, it is a high probability that sweet taste in the mouth is due to the high levels of glucose in the blood. Also, I would like to tell you that diabetes as a disease can have organ complications like nephropathy (related to kidney), retinopathy, neuropathy etcetera. Sometimes the neurological alterations can also result in altered taste is the mouth and some sensations may be directly affected. And I would like you to consult a physician and get your glucose levels under control by medicines and exercise.

As you also suggest the kidneys have been involved, I would like to tell you that sweet taste has probably nothing to do with the kidneys not filtering properly as diabetes is usually caused by reduced or no secretion of insulin or due to insulin resistance. Please get your glucose levels under control for symptoms to subside.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shilpi Sharma
