What Causes Swelling Along With Pain And Tightness In Calf Muscles?

One calf muscle is slightly swollen, very tight and painful to walk on. It aches even sitting down. I can t think of anything I ve done to damage it (like exercise) and my other calf doesn t hurt. I m worried it may be a blood clot (my husband s guess), but if it s something that will pass, I would rather not have the expense of a doctor s visit. Do you think I should wait a few more days and give it time to heal on it s own (it started 2 days ago) or see a doctor? I am 62, female, blood pressure is in normal range, overweight but exercise (cardio and/or weights) 2-3 times a week.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If only one calf is swollen then a clot is possible and you should be assessed by a doctor.

This would include physical examination and possibly a doppler ultrasound to take a look at the blood vessels to see if a clot is present.

Trauma to the area is another cause of unilateral swelling and pain.

If a clot is identified then you need anti coagulant medication.

I hope this helps
