What Causes Swelling And Bruising In The Foot After Injury?

I hit my foot (around the ankle area) on a hard chair. It hurt really bad. This was two days ago. I had a bruise and it was swollen and still is. I iced it for about 30 minutes and swelling did not go down. It hurts to bear weight on it and it also hurts to touch the swollen area even a little bit. I have tried to stay off it and relax it. I m not sure what it is or if I did any damage to my bone or anything. Any help would be appreciated

Hello,

It takes time for the bruise to go away and it depends upon the extent of inury. As you said it huets to bear weight on the foot as well as the swelling has not reduced much.

I would suggest you get an Xray of the injured area done and see an orthopedician without wasting time.

If there is any damage to the bone then it needs to be treated appropriately by the orthopedician and if there is no injury to the bone then pain killers and anti-inflammatory medicines will be adviced by your doctor to reduce the pain and inflammation.

Follow your doctor’s advise on the dosage and duration of the medicines for faster recovery.

Make sure you take enough rest and do the minimal movement of the area that is injured.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
