My mother in law aged 90 has now developed swollen legs and which are turning black just around the ankle and a little higher. Some days they are a darker shade of purple and others they are turning black. She was diagnosed a liiitle earlier with Cirrhosis of the liver (non- alcohol related) and because of the swelling she has been put on a tsrong diuretic which has now been reduced stpped because it was making her urinate all the time and out of control. Her legs are painful as well. One leg is wrse that the other ? Can you tell me what this might be ?? No results have yet come in She is due to have a doppler test tomorrow, and she has already tested for a pulse in her which now has been identified by the doctor

What Causes Swelling And Darkening Of Legs?
Hello, Varicose vein is a possibility. You can go for a venous Doppler to confirm the diagnosis. Other causes like renal dysfunction and hypoalbuminemia must be ruled out. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care Regards, Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
