What Causes Swelling And Inflammation In The Leg After An Injury?

I am 72 years old. Eleven days ago I tripped on a small step from our family room into the kitchen and fell hard onto the floor. My left leg bruised and swelled almost immediately. I put ice on it for two days and slept with my leg elevated. It seemed to be getting better, but today the leg seems to be swelling again, the calf is warm or hot to the touch. The calf area is where it is red. What should I do? Ice or Heat?
