What Causes Swelling And Numbness In The Hands?

hello, my question is this, both my hands are swollen and very numb. recently I was in Hospital for 15 days due to sever flue turned into phneumona and broncidus sorry about the spelling. while in hospital I got sever adema in my lower body, and still have it. Dr s cant tell me what caused it other than the meds they gave me to help me breath, some steriod. My hands are my concern now due to the fact that they are very painful and feel like there asleep. Hard to make a fist at all and cant even hold a cup of coffee in right hand. any thoughts?
