What Causes Swelling And Numbness In The Legs After Hip Reconstruction?

My wife has breast cancer which has spread to her bones. She had left hip reconstructed in Nov, 2016. She has had swelling and tingling and numbness in both legs and feet but mostly the left leg since May of 2016. She started physical therapy 2 weeks ago for the left leg which includes a compression device in the clinic for an hour each visit to help blood flow. Since starting the therapy her left leg has become much more numb and is causing much concern for her. Is it a coincidence concerning the timing or is it possibly something else. What should she do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

As per my surgical experience, there can be cellulitis with or without underlying nerve compression at the operated site giving distal symptoms of numbness. I recommend a detailed neurologic examination with CT scan of the operated hip.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel,
General Surgeon
