Dear-thanks for using our service, I understand your concern and will help you with my advise.Foot swelling could be secondary to osteoarthritis,specially in a lady who is 97y/o.Other possibilities are tendinitis,gouty arthritis and bursitis. It is advisable to have a foot xray for better visualization of her problem.If the xray does not show a possible reason, then MRI of the foot will be the next step to find out if there is evidence of plantar fasciitis ,small bone fracture ,etc.
I recommend to try with analgesics as ibuprofen and put the foot in epstain salt which helps inflammation.
