Thank you for your question.
I understand your concern.
Swelling of the legs and feet can be due to many causes. Like heart diseases,
kidney diseases,
liver diseases , problems of the blood vessels of the legs or infection called as
cellulitis. So it is very important to differentiate between these causes.
Prior history of any disease is important . So is any history of
injury or hospital admissions . Due to any reasons bed bound for the past 3 days or more is also pertinent.
First to identify between local infection or other problems is to see if local temperature of the legs is increased as compared to rest of the body if they are then local infection can be suspected. Then when you press on the shin with thump for few seconds to see if a pit is formed or not after your remove your thump. this is called as pitting edema
To be sure about the diagnosis laboratory investigations have to be done like renal function test, liver function test, urine detailed report . To identify a vascular problem a Doppler
ultrasound of both legs can be done to see if any blockage in either the venous or
arterial blood vessels is the cause of the swelling.
All of these causes have to be looked into as there treatment modalities are quiet different.
