What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Ankle?

Ok, so Iam 49 yo female, history of ankle sprain and strain over the years starting as a cheerleader and gymnast in my late teens This continues today, showing as weak ankles, twisting my ankle on a sidewalk or just simply walking. Currently, Ive been experience regular daily swelling with pain and discomfort, sometimes burning. I notice it after Ive been walking on it all day, or after doing cardio on the elliptical, but even after sleeping, I wake up with it swollen. I use ice and seems to help in the short term. I don t have any history of diabetes, and the swelling isn t water retention, evidenced by touching the area and the indentation doesn t stay indented. Thank you for your thoughts. No, i haven t seen a doctor yet for this, only my primary care provider.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Dear. There are lot of causes why there can be ankle swelling Most common cause is- 1. Injury. There might be repeated sprain and injury to the ankle joint which might cause swelling
2. Infection of joints
3. Heart conditions- like congestive cardiac failure (Unlikely as per your history)
4. liver failure (unlikely as per your history)
5. Kidney failure (unlikely as per your history)
6. Rheumatoid arthritis- which may cause joint pains and swelling of joints. But mainly small joints of hands are affected
7. Gout- its a condition where uric acid accumulates in blood and deposits in joints of foot and cause painful joints.
You please meet a specialist physician and get evaluated. The doctor may do blood tests to rule out all these conditions and x ray of the joint to see any pathology
Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
