What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Eyelids?

My daughter and I had make up applied by a event artist and within a short time our eyes began to hurt, teared constantly and later eyelids both swelled and turned red and were very painful. I used ice packs and eye antibiotic while my daughter used Benadryl. Within a few days we were much better. Were we both allergic to something or could there have been dirty instruments in application or altered makeup with possible additional chemicals in it? Please advise as no other bridesmaid had any issues but they used other artists. Thanks.
