What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Foot After An Injury?

I stepped in something bare foot on sunday and at the timee it felt like a bit of glass stabbing me. It was sooo painful!! But looked more like a thorne. My pal got tweezers to try get it out but it wouldnt. I think he push it further in cos the pain went but we couldnt see anything on the tweezers. Its swollen and feels like its burnt. Hurts to walk. No other symptons.
