What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Hands While Suffering From Diabetes?

I am a 63 year old male with type two diabetes. I take medicine daily and my normal sugar reading is 120. I drink quit a lot in the evenings and don t eat properly and have lost weight in the last year. I m 6 2 and weigh 143 lbs. I also am a heavy smoker. Recently divorced, i thought maybe all this was do to that. The thing is, two days ago the backs of my hands started to swell and are sore. What is going on. No fever or anything like that.
