Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Lower Leg After An Insect Bite?
I was bitten or stung by something on the back of my calf about a day and a half ago, and it hurts really bad. There is a dime sized welt with a raw dark redish/purple spot in the middle. Now the lower part of my leg is slightly swollen, and there is a bruise forming above to bite. Also a tiny bit of like a pin prickly kind of tingling feeling sensation all the way into my toes. What bit me, and should i see a Dr.
It looks like a poisonous bite causing a localized allergic reaction leading to dime sized welt and along with it redness, swelling and tingling.
If the symptoms are spreading then it is advisable to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated. A blood test can be done for confirmation.
For now, you can take anti allergic medicine like Fexofenadine or Levocetirizine and see if the symptoms improve. Along with it do cool compresses over the swelling. Apply a steroid-based ointment to reduce the localized reaction.
You can also be given a steroid shot to reduce the symptoms faster and avoid spread.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora,
Dentist
