What Causes Swelling And Purple Discoloration On The Shin After An Injury?

My husband hit his shin and it instantly swelled and turned purple but the swelling went down a few hours later now it has been a week and his ankle is swollen and has bruising one the side of it and bruising going up the leg. Is this normal with a shin injury or should I take him to the hospital?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
if the joints associated are inflamed and very much pain ful on movement then it is problematic but as u are explaining as reduced swelling and only blue marks which are due to blood accumulation under skin which usually happens in injuries and it's nothing to worry , also if there is much accumulation of fluid under the skin and is fluctuating in nature then it needs to be drained and antibiotics and analgesics are also to be administered for cure
