What Causes Swelling And Red Spots On The Back Of The Head After A Hit?

my son got knocked over playing kick ball by a much larger boy and hit the back of his head on asphalt. He doesn't have any swelling but has red spots on the back of his head where it hit. should I get him checked out? he is now sleeping and hasn't vomited at all or even needed pain reliever.

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that your son did not need painkiller, there was no vomiting and he is conscious, oriented. But to rule out dangerous signs of head injury, observe these signs also
: bleeding through nose, ear and throat
: loss of consciousness
: decreasing consciousness
: fits
: memory disturbance which is persistent
If there is no above sign, you can wait at home. If any of above signs, you should consult ER as soon as possible.

Meanwhile at home, you can
: Apply icepacks at injury site
: Give him painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription
: Avoid any painkiller which can cause sedation like opium painkillers
: If there is episode of vomiting, turn his head to side
The redness will disappear in 10-14 days on its own.

Hope it will help you. Thanks. Take care.
