What Causes Swelling And Redness In Eye?

Hi My daughter (10 years old) was given antibiotic eye drops for probable pink eye. after 8 doses, we are seeing no improvement. The eye is swollen with only discharge in the morning when she wakes up. however the swelling and redness is constant. looks like the outer edge is becoming bruised. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello.
thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
pink eye or conjunctivitis can be bacterial, viral or allergic in nature.
sometimes antibiotics alone may not be enough for conjunctivitis.
A mild steroid or an anti-inflammatory should be added as it relieves swelling and redness.
If I were your treating doctor I would have suggested a combination of an antibacterial with a steroid such as Zylet or Pred-G eye drops. it can be used every 8th hourly. significant improvement should be seen within two days.
warm compressions over the eye would help in relieving pain and swelling.
hope my answer helped. feel free to write back.
