What Causes Swelling And Soreness On Feet And Ankles After An Accident?
I was in a car accident a week ago, I was lucky enough to walk away just sore but the accident was very severe. Today however, my feet began to get sore and feel weak going up and down stairscases. Now, my feet and ankles are swollen and I can hardly see my ankle bones. They aren t sore to the touch, but the swelling is kind of harder than usual. Could this have anything to do with the accident?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to sprain ( injury to ligaments) or strain ( injury to muscles) of ankle joint. This could have occurred in the accident. Better to have a physical examination by orthopedician and X ray to rule out any hair line fracture or serious strain or sprain. You can apply ice packs locally for initial 2 to 3 days. Immobilisation should be done by elastic bandage or brace also. You can take NSAIDs like ibuprofen for getting relief from pain and swelling. Raise the leg up while sleeping and sitting to reduce edema faster.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
