Swelling and soreness on the sides of the ankle commonly occurs due to water retention, RA, OA, Gout, thyroid issues, kidney or heart problems. Since you want to taper off safely you should first report to the treating doctor and if need be get connected to a detox center.
When you start tapering the dose you will experience withdrawal symptoms that has to be managed urgently. If you are connected to a detox center you will get medical support and all help to detox successfully. In the meantime, give rest to your foot. keep it elevated on a stool when you are sitting. Keep it elevated on a pillow when you are in bed.
Control your carbohydrate intake & cut on salt intake. Stay away from addictions. Get blood workouts done to detect the pathology, get treated at the earliest.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
