What Causes Swelling And Tingling Sensation In Palms?

Hi Doctor. I am a 57 year old woman. About a month ago I spent 3 days doing some heavy duty gardening. On the fourth day I felt stiffness of index finger on the right. The next day I had also had palm swelling on the same hand. By end of the week I had swelling of both hands. The worst of it is in the palms. I was seen at a local clinic. Diagnosis was hand over use. I have been taking Ibuprofen, warm compress and a over the counter wrist splint for over 2 weeks. I now have some neck pain and a tingling sensation in both hands and continued palm swelling. Also have sharp pain in hands when gripping, also both hands are very warm. I am fit and have never had any major illness or injury. I am due to return to clinic in one month.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Is there a tingling and numbness in fingers, especially the index and the middle finger. If yes, then this could be a case of carpal tunnel syndrome. I would suggest you get a nerve conduction study done. This will certainly confirm the diagnosis. If it proved to be carpal tunnel then a simple excision surgery should give you relief. This procedure can be done in both mini open or arthroscopically and in many centres as a day care procedure.
