What Causes Swelling Around A Tdap Shot Site?

Yes. My husband was giving a Tdap shot at the VA about ten weeks ago. He had a reaction at the injection site consisting of swelling and scabbing the size of a quarter. The VA gave no meds and said to wait a few weeks. Instead we went to our local doctor and she gave him doxy-cycline and hot compress treatments. It has been seven days and no change. What is happening? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

The swelling and scabbing is likely due to a localized reaction to the vaccine. This is part of the body's inflammatory response.

You may want to consider the use of anti inflammatory medication such as naproxen or ibuprofen , these would reduce inflammation. This can be used along with an anti histamine to further reduce inflammation eg zyrtec, allegra, claritine, benadryl.
The hot compresses can also be continued as well

I hope this helps
