Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I was in the ER today and had an IV - the guy who did it dig around a little to find the right Vein. It hurt. After they took it out I didn't apply pressure well right away so it bled a lot. Finally put pressure if bleeding stopped. Now there is a tender swollen sport near the IV site. Is this a concern? I am worried it's a deadly blood clot or something...
Probable diagnosis: Superficial phlebitis. Plan of treatment : Conservative. Outcome : Excellent.
As per your description it seems that you have a clinical condition called "phlebitis",Its nothing but an inflammation of your veins which is very common after improper insertion of an IV line. There is no need to worry regarding this because its a highly curable condition and chances of complications are very less. You can use simple analgesics like ibuprofen or paracetamol for pain and discomfort. You can also apply ointments like "thrombophobe" locally over the affected area. If there is formation pus,You have to take a short course of antibiotics like moxclav for five to seven days. If you have persistence of symptoms please consult a general practitioner for evaluation. Hope I have answered your query. Wishing you good health.
Regards. Dr.Shinas Hussain
