Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good evening, My mother had her blood drawn yesterday on her hand with a butterfly needle. Shortly after, her hand became swollen in the area the blood was drawn. The swelling appears to extend from the thumb to wrist area. Its tender and there is also a weakness. She is unable to hold a cup of tea, pull up pants...general weakness to the hand. Any suggestions of what might be going on and how best to treat?
It is possible that the vein may have been punctured with the blood taking and there may be trauma to the underlying muscles and tissues surrounding the veins.
This , unfortunately, is a complication of phlebotomy.
It can take 1 to 2 weeks for complete healing will occur. Anti inflammatory medication, if she can use these, may help. This includes meds such as naproxen, cataflam, ibuprofen, should be used on a full stomach
I hope this helps
