Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
The back of my tongue is swollen on the right side and it contains a slight ache. Should I be concerned? It makes it difficult to swallow depending on how swollen it is, the swelling feels better with something cold, and the swelling is not there constantly. It is on and off.
Thanks for your query . There can be many reasons for swollen tongue at the back like gastroesophageal reflux ,hiatal hernia , peptic ulcer and gal bladder stone . Gastroesophageal reflux is most common cause .
I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination and rule out other causes . Doctor may order endoscopy or barium swallow . He/she may prescribe antacids ,acid blocker like omeprazole and antibiotics if infection is there .If condition still persist you should also consult oral pathologist /ENT specialist(ear, nose ,throat)
For now you should avoid heavy meals during night ,avoid acidic and spicy foods and drink plenty of water .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
