What Causes Swelling In Abdomen And Face After Having Metformin?

My husband has been prescribed metformin at three different times and has had severe swelling in the abdomen, face and extremities .This last time he became short of breath he ended up in the hospital and on O2 at home. He had taken it for 6 days. Would this be considered an allergic reaction?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved husband.

I have gone through the problems mentioned in your query, I am of the opinion that the swelling over his face, extremities and the abdomen with difficulty in breathing appears to be due to the allergy to Metformin.

The most common side effects of Metformin include stomach upset, cramps, and rarely an allergic reaction.

He must avoid taking Metformin.

Hope this answers your query.
