Hi my husband has ankle and leg swelling for one week now, also he has began to show dry skins patches on both of his legs from the knee down. You would please help us understand what is going on. He is currently on several blood pressure medicines, and one medicine HCTZ (25mg) he stop taking because he stated that he forgot. We have seen a physician and the doctor place him on HCTZ immediately. We are still concerned with the leg swelling and now he has these dry patches forming on his legs. Please help us.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Swelling of feet and legs is seen in cardiac patients. High blood pressure usually co-exists with cardiac dysfunction. Thus, you need to consult your cardiologist for cardiac assessment. The medicines for blood pressure should be continued and blood pressure should be monitored regularly. The skin patches on both legs are possibility due to some primary skin disease. The patches are unlikely to be due to high blood pressure or cardiac ailment. Consult a dermatologist for clinical assessment of the skin patches.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
