What Causes Swelling In Ankles And Calves While Having Arthritis In Knees?
I am overweight and have been most of my adult life. I am 52 and female. In the last few weeks I have had swelling in my ankles and calves and it is now painful to walk. I also have arthritis in my knees really bad. But my main concern is the swelling.....I have had some before that goes away after laying down or elevating my feet. But now it is staying swollen. Any suggestions what it may be?
As mentioned in your history, due to excess weight and Arthitis, your Mobility is low and there is lack of venous return. due to which you are facing swelling in the ankles. Also, by reducing the mobility, there is a slowdown of the venous return and the pumping of the heart is stressed.
i will recommend to consult a physical therapist who can assess you and help you further for your OA knee and swelling of ankles. Also weight reduction will occur as you keep exercising.
in my clinical practice I have seen OA knee cases with swelling of ankles, high blood pressure, high blood glucose levels and over weight. but with proper medicine and physical therapy they responded well in 12 weeks and the mobility is increased. I would say my patients can walk a stretch of 4-5 kms in one go.
