What Causes Swelling In Ankles Of A Diabetic Patient?

I m a 71 yr old female, with controlled type 2 diabetes, moderately active, happily married. Lately, I ve been experiencing swelling in my ankles late in the day. What should I be doing, not doing? Probable signs of what? I do have regular family doctor - but haven t contacted her yet. Thanks
