What Causes Swelling In Hands And Head After Entering Water?
My 18 year old son in good health spent the day surfing on the Oregon coast. A wet suit covered his body except for hands and head. shortly after entering the water, his hands swelled dramatically with a type of rash around his wrists and a yellowish tinge around his finger joints. He left the water and took several benedryl. the swelling slowly subsided but is still present. What might cause this. Thanks Steve
Your son might have had an allergic reaction to something he got in contact while entering the water. The fact that the rash got better with Benadryl is a factor that makes this even more possible.
The rash may take a few days to fully disappear. Meanwhile, as long as he does not get any shortness of breath or swelling of lips or eyes, he can continue with Benadryl.
If he is not better in a few days or he notices any worsening of any shortness of breath or swollen lips or eyes he needs to see the doctor.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
