Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling In Hands With Joint Pains After Starting Medication For Rheumatoid Arthritis?
My husband was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis last Monday and immediately began treatment with methotrexate. He is in his third weed of eating a diet to reduce inflammation (Whole30 - with no processed sugar, no dairy, legumes, grains or anything processed), yet today his hands are swelling again and joint pain has increased also today in his knees and shoulders. I was wondering if this might be a reaction to his new medicine. He takes 4 pills once a week, and tomorrow will be his second dose.
hello. please don't worry. just wait for a fortnight. what you are describing are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. methotrexate is the drug of choice for RA and shall take around a week to start showing some results. in case the swelling or pain increase after a fortnight then please consult a rheumatologist. your husband might require a dose increase or a change of medicine. take care
