What Causes Swelling In Lower Legs Upon Flying In A Person With Diabetes?
When I fly my lower legs and ankles swell, the next day they are back to normal. Last week Tuesday I flew and my legs and ankles are still swelling. I am having my period right now so I thought that might have something to do with it. I also have a desk job. I am a diabetic also.
You have history of being diabetic. You are having swelling in your lower legs after flying. Excess swelling of the feet and ankles is commonly caused by accumulation of fluid in the tissues. Swelling occurs due to hormonal changes(during menstruation), it is common after eating salty foods and sitting in one position for too long. Try to take breaks between work since you have a desk job.
Diabetes can also cause edema or swelling in the feet and ankles due to sedentary lifestyle, poor circulation, obesity, side effects of medications, heart or kidney problems. Get clinically examined by a GP, get required blood workouts, investigations and imaging tests done to detect the pathology, you will be accordingly treated. To get relieve keep your legs elevated on a pillow when on bed and on a stool while sitting.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
