What Causes Swelling In Lower Legs Upon Waking Up Post Gall Bladder Removal Surgery?

Had gallbladder removed (laproscopically) on March 27th. Since then have had major swelling from knees to toes in both legs. Have had echo cardio done, came back normal, vascular test came back normal, thyroid came back normal, rheumatologist said nothing presents from his area. Any suggestions as to where to look next for possible cause? Swelling goes down over night, but is back within two minutes of rising in morning.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since most of your reports are normal you are suggested to cut on salt and carbohydrate intake. Your symptoms can be due to water retention. When seated, keep your legs on a stool and while on bed keep it on a pillow. If obese, reduce your weight. Side effects of some medications may manifest such symptoms, check what medicines you take. If diabetic, maintain your blood glucose levels at all cost.

Swelling leg and feet may be indicative of coronary artery disease or developing kidney disease. You are suggested to get clinically examined and assessed by a nephrologist. Get a cardiac check up done as well. In the meantime, avoid taking salty, oily, spicy, junk food. Avoid addictions if any. Stay well hydrated and do regular walking. Take veggies, nuts & whole grains.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
